Painted ceiling from the 17th century discovered by mistake
These are the hidden gems of working at AHAM. The fact that a seventeenth-century painted ceiling was accidentally found during a large-scale renovation of a canal house brings color to our day tot day business.
The ceiling was probably placed in 1650 by a wealthy merchant. The ceiling is richly decorated with frivolously painted images from Greek Mythology.
Now that we have been able to completely expose the ceiling in consultation with the Municipality of Amsterdam, we will have it documented by an art historian. Because the renovation is part of a complex where people live and is simply part of a construction site, we had to refrain from opening it to the public.
We would like to share photos here and keep an eye on our site for the art historian’s full report.
