De Rietschuur
At Kriekenoord 7, in Plantage de Sniep in Diemen, De Rietschuur is being brought back to life. This distinctive listed building has long remained hidden, but will soon reclaim its role as a central landmark for the neighbourhood. The property is undergoing a full renovation and restoration, carefully preserving its original design and historic character. Designed by Frank van Klingeren, the building is defined by its thatched roof, high and light-filled spaces, striking wooden trusses, and a fully glazed south-facing façade. Inside, the mural by Pierre van Soest from 1957 will be retained as a key feature. On the sunny side, a generous terrace will be created, directly connected to the walking and cycling route alongside the building. Together, these elements make De Rietschuur an open and inviting place with a wide range of possibilities.
Heart of a growing neighbourhood
Plantage de Sniep is a new residential area home to many young families, a significant number of whom have moved here from Amsterdam. The surrounding area also features sports facilities for hockey, football and tennis. The restoration of De Rietschuur is part of the wider Rietschuurkwartier development, which will also include newly built homes for active seniors.
Throughout several community sessions with local residents and users of the area, one need consistently stood out: a place to come together. In this part of Diemen, both hospitality and health facilities are limited, while demand is high. De Rietschuur has the potential to fill that gap and grow into the heart of the neighbourhood — a place where residents meet, where people stay after sports, and where you can relax on a sunny terrace.
Its accessibility further strengthens this potential. From Amsterdam Watergraafsmeer, the location is less than a ten-minute bike ride via a quiet, green route. Betondorp, Diemen-Zuid and Science Park are also nearby. The tram stop Diemen de Sniep is just a five-minute walk away, with tram 19 providing a direct connection to, among others, Amsterdam Amstel station and the city centre.
Hospitality and health under one roof
The concept for De Rietschuur is built around two complementary pillars: hospitality and health. Together, these functions reinforce one another and create a steady flow of visitors throughout the day.
The hospitality space is designed as an accessible, welcoming place for everyone. It will offer honest, sustainable and healthy food — for and by the neighbourhood. A place where children can enjoy a glass of apple juice, seniors can drop in for an affordable cup of coffee, residents can meet for an informal work catch-up, and users of the nearby sports fields can relax with a drink and a snack. In summer, the terrace naturally becomes a lively gathering spot for the wider Diemen community.
Health forms the second key pillar and can be interpreted broadly. This could include physiotherapy for athletes and local residents, yoga or Pilates classes for people living in De Sniep, fall-prevention programmes for seniors, or other forms of training and movement. The offering can set itself apart from a traditional gym and will be tailored to the needs of the neighbourhood. The exact concept is open to the entrepreneur and can evolve over time as demand develops.
For ambitious entrepreneurs
For De Rietschuur, we are looking for entrepreneurs who want to be more than just tenants — people who are driven to build a strong local network and take pride in playing an active role in the neighbourhood. A proven concept would fit well here and can provide a solid start from the moment the building is delivered.
AHAM Vastgoed will begin construction at the end of this year, with completion scheduled for Q3 2027. Now is the time to start shaping the concept together and create something from day one that truly fits both the location and the community.
De Rietschuur offers a rare opportunity: a distinctive historic building with character, space, and a clear demand from the surrounding area. Are you the entrepreneur who will help us turn this into a new destination for Diemen?
