Roest 2.0
The island feeling in the middle of the city. That's what you get on Oostenburg, one of the three urban islands on the edge of Amsterdam's city center. The former shipyard of the VOC is being transformed into a sustainable and lively city neighborhood on the water. While retaining its historic and industrial character, the neighborhood is becoming an adventurous place with a raw edge.
In the heart of Oostenbrug, on the sunny quay is the iconic Roest. This landmark building has been renovated, expanded and preserved wherever possible while maintaining its historic character. Now, the building is ready to open its doors once again.
Roest 2.0 is a detached municipal monument. The property has approximately 729 m2 MoD and is located at VOC Quay 26 on the corner of Jan Kiststraat.
Originally Roest was a so-called Koudgasgebouw. Here energy was generated for the machines of the factory halls of Werkspoor, a large factory for tools and railroad equipment. After the building fell into disuse early this century, cultural sanctuary Roest opened its doors in 2011. In the preliminary phase of the area development of the new city district Oostenbrug, it played an important role in putting this undiscovered piece of downtown Amsterdam on the map.
