Oostenburgermiddenstraat 188, 1018 LL Amsterdam
Oostenburg is part of the Oostelijke Eilanden, which were partly built around 1650 in the IJ and partly dug in the then eastern meadows. Traditionally, many shipyards and supply companies were located on the Oostelijke Eilanden due to their favorable location in relation to the IJ. After the dissolution of the VOC in 1795, the island was put back into use in 1827 by Werkspoor, a factory for making steam engines, which merged with Stork in 1954, which built its diesel engines here and sold the site in 1998 to IBC real estate.
Seated between old center and new residential areas on the IJ, the island still exudes the atmosphere of Amsterdam’s nineteenth and twentieth century industrial history. Each building in this new water-rich city district has its own identity in the plan. On the one hand because a different architect is responsible for each building and on the other because there is a strong area management from the municipality, within which there is a strong focus on design and materialization.
The island will be car-free and can only be reached by car via Conradstraat. It will be a neighborhood with green roofs and reuse of materials from the industrial past. Solar panels and heat supply from the ground ensure that Oostenburg becomes a sustainable neighborhood. It is already very popular with café restaurants Roest and Rosa & Rita as well as Inntel hotel & restaurant with a terrace on the quay. Surprising initiatives and exciting concepts drew curious visitors to the historic Van Gendthallen for years.
